Year 5 Tower of London

1st February 2026

On Friday 13th February,  Year 5 set off for a memorable day of history at the Tower of London. The excitement began the moment we boarded the coach! As we travelled into the heart of the capital, Mr. Oakley acted as our expert tour guide, pointing out iconic London landmarks including the Art Deco Hoover Building, the towering Shard and finally, the historic walls of the Tower itself.

Upon arrival, the children stepped into nearly a thousand years of history. Our first stop was the White Tower, where we explored fascinating displays of royal armour and took part in interactive battle simulations. This gave the children a real "hands-on" feel for how soldiers lived and fought throughout the centuries.

A highlight for many was the visit to the Jewel House. The children were mesmerised by the Crown Jewels, including the magnificent Crown worn by King Charles III. We also had the privilege of speaking with the Yeoman Warders (Beefeaters). They shared stories about their historic roles and explained the famous legend of the Tower’s ravens: that if the six resident birds ever leave the fortress, the Tower and the Kingdom will fall!

To wrap up our visit, we took a guided tour into the darker side of the Tower’s past. We visited a prison room, which is not open to the public, where the children saw first-hand the cramped conditions and inscriptions left by prisoners from hundreds of years ago.

It was a great way to start our topic on Crime and Punishment.
