Welcome to Year 6. In the Year 6 team we have Miss Price, Mrs Sharp, Miss Farid, Mrs Walker, Miss Wilson and Miss Ahmad. 
 

Our PE days are Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please ensure that your child has their correct PE kit in school. We recommend that they bring this into school on a Monday and bring it home again on a Friday to be washed. 

Homework will be set daily. There will be a daily Times Tables Rockstars and Ed Shed assignment. There will also be a weekly SPaG and Spelling assignment that needs to be completed 3 times over the week. Please remember that your child should read daily.  Every child has a book in their bag that is linked to the school reading scheme plus a free-reader. The free-reader is a book that they have chosen themselves to read for pleasure - please encourage them to do so!

Maths

This half term, we will be working on our fundamnetal maths skills. This includes looking at place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. These skills are crucial to success in Year 6 so please support your child with their homeowrk ensuring that these skills are secure.

In writing this half term. we will start by twaching children all the key SPaG skills needed for Year 6. This ensures the children have the foundations for their writing and we can practise these skills througout the year. Each writing lesson will start with a quick SPaG activity to ensure these skills are regualry revisited.  We will then move on to writing a diary entry based on the book Floodlands. 

In reading this half term, we will be reading Floodlands by Marcus Sedgwick and Kensuke's Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. 

How can parents/carers support writing at home?

  1. Ensure writing resources are available: notebook and pencils, paper to write on, a diary to write in.
  2. Start a vocabulary notebook: Teach your child new words each week and encourage them to use them. Discuss vocabulary in the books you share together and jot these down too. 
  3. Encourage your child to keep a reflective journal or diary. They could write about things that happen at home and school. This reflective journal can be used to develop their writing style and enjoyment. Have your child write about what they saw, heard or felt on a trip or outing. Especially encourage them to write about their personal feelings - pleasures as well as disappointments. When reading your child's journal (if they invite you to), share your own feelings and ideas and give them positive feedback about their writing. 
  4. Children who read books regularly are generally better equipped to write and spell to a high standard, and have better developed imaginations. Read as much as possible! Local libraries are a terrific resource and they are lovely places to visit and spend time together.

Here are some writing opportunities for Year 6 children at home:

Shopping lists, recipes, writing a diary, thank-you letters after a party or birthday, send a letter or email to a family member who lives in another town or country.

Crystal Explorers is a game for children to practise their SPAG learning.

  • Science: The children will be learning about electricity which includes the chance to make different circuits. 

  • Geography: The geography topic this half term looks at rivers including the water cycle.

  • Art: In Art, students will focus on self portraits in the style of M C Escher

  • PE: The focus for PE this half term will be gymnastics and football.

  • MFL: We will be continuing to learn Spanish focusing on the Wider World.

  • PSHE: This unit focuses on familes and friends. 

  • Computing: The children will look at different types of data.  

It is important that every child has the correct PE kit in school, that is clearly labelled. Please bring a PE kit to school on Monday and then take it home to be washed on Friday.
