Welcome to Year 5.

Our teaching team this year includes Miss Smith, Mrs Fakih and Mrs Nawaz.

Our PE days are Mondays and Fridays. 

Homework

To support our learning in school, there are three pieces of homework expected every day. Please sign the reading journal to show that each of the following has been completed:

1) 20 minutes of reading to an adult 
2) Maths Task
3) Spelling or Grammar Task

Maths Shed and Spelling on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
TTRS and Grammar on Tuesday and Thursday.
Reading should include listening to a child read aloud and having discussions about the plot and characters.

English

Reading

Our fiction book in the first part of the autumn term, is 'The Witches' by Roald Dahl and it is set in Norway and England. Please continue to listen to your child read aloud daily and discuss the plot and characters together. Ask questions to check their understanding and encourage them to make comparisons with other books and their own experience. Reading is the best way for children to develop their vocabulary and their imagination and forms the foundation for success in all the other subjects!

 

Writing

Our writing will focus on a warning tale about a dangerous place and will explore the appropriate sentence structures and vocabulary for achieving a narrative warning and descriptive tone. 

Punctuation in Year 5 includes commas for clauses, semi-colons, dashes and inverted commas, as well as, full stops, exclamation and question marks. 

Spelling patterns will be: tious, ious, cious, cial, tial and words ending in 'ant'. 

Ways to support your child with English 
Please find below a list of websites which will help your child succeed in reading and writing: 
Read together daily! Talk about words and characters and settings and what you might you do in similar situations. Take turns to read to keep your child motivated.

Maths

In the autumn term, we will be exploring place value, rounding numbers, Roman Numerals, addition and subtraction.

Ways to support your child with Maths 
The best way to improve maths knowledge and understanding is to notice maths everywhere in our daily lives! Practise telling the time and looking at timetables, add and subtract money, calculate percentages by looking for special offers when shopping.

Geography
This term, we will be learning about South American countries and the cities within them.
 
Science
This term's topic is about Earth and Space, we are looking forward to our Space Day on Wednesday 16th September 2026.
 

PE

PE is on Monday and Friday afternoons and appropriate PE kit is required.

  • Plain, royal-blue crew neck T–shirt.
  • Plain, royal blue shorts or navy blue tracksuit bottoms. (plain, navy blue leggings may be worn if changed from those worn as part of school uniform).
  • Plain, white or black trainers (optional plimsoles for indoor PE).
  • Earrings (studs only) removed or taped.
This term's topics are yoga and handball.
Art
We will be exploring Frida Kahlo and making self-portraits.
 
RE
We will be looking important people in Christianity and Sikhism. 
 
Oracy
Having effective discussions, requires certain physical, social, and language skills, which we will be practicing in these lessons. Please share conversations about these at home. 
 
Metacognition and Learning for Life
Children are taught how to become successful, independent learners by changing their mindset in Metacognition, In Learning for Life we will be learning a new skill and reflecting on our progress.
 
Spanish
Our new unit is learning words and phrases on the topic of 'My Town'. 
Computing

In computing, our unit on creating media involves stop motion animation and is called Sonic:Pi.

Year 5 Enriching Experiences
 
Throughout the autumn term we have some exciting experiences coming up, including 'Space Day' and our Christmas Workshop.   In the spring term, we will be going to the Tower of London as part of our history topic 'Crime and punishment'. We are also hoping to attend an Easter Workshop at the local church. During the summer term, we are looking forward to our visit to the Cotswold Wildlife Park when we learn about the lifecycles of plants and animals. We will add photos of our trips and experiences on the school website as they happen!  Some Year 5 children will get the opportunity to go on a residential trip later in the year - more details to follow!
